The Monday Night Concert Series features “Shimon Marcucci’s East and West Creative Soul” at 7 p.m. Monday, December 19, at the Oak Park Arms retirement community, 408 S. Oak Park Ave.
Shimon Marcucci and Jim Gailloreto are featured on saxophones, improvising around original melodies that grew out of Marcucci’s early interest in Indian raga music. Marcucci’s earliest immersion in eastern music was with Berber music and Arabic Andalusian music in Morocco.
Jim Gailloreto, who has a masters in music composition from Northwestern University, is an accomplished jazz saxophonist who has developed a project to integrate jazz improvisation with original compositions for string quartet. He has worked with renowned artists such as Patricia Barber and John McLean.
The music will show a range of possibilities in a single musical scale or mode that is poetic, dramatic and playful. Each musical piece will display a carefully crafted mood that becomes more vivid as the melodies develop.
The Monday Night Concert Series, which is free and open to the public, is dedicated to presenting small ensembles, primarily solos, duos and trios.
