A doctor will lead a discussion on nutrition at “Breakfast with the Docs” at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 12 at the Oak Park Arms retirement community, 408 S. Oak Park Ave.
Healthy eating is importance at any age, but for those over 50, proper nutrition helps increase mental acuteness and resistance to illness and disease. It also provides higher energy levels, faster recuperation times from illness or injury, and helps one better manage chronic health issues.
In addition, maintaining proper nutrient levels helps aging adults stay emotionally balanced and keep a positive outlook in life.
As people age, less gastric acid in the stomach makes it more difficult to absorb vitamin B12, and skin becomes less efficient at synthesizing vitamin D. Seniors are also prone to a decreased sense of thirst and dehydration. For these reasons it is especially important for seniors to pay attention to the intake of water, vitamin B and vitamin D.
Oak Park Arms Senior Living is a rental retirement community which provides senior housing in the form of independent living. Furnished apartments are also available for a short-term stay – a weekend, a week, a month or longer.
The event is free and open to the public. And it’s not called “Breakfast with the Docs” for nothing: participants who attend will also be served a healthy breakfast.
